Bismarck is the state capital of North Dakota. It is the county seat of Burleigh County and has a population of over 74,138 people. An economic center of the region, Bismarck is home to the North Dakota State Capitol, the tallest building in North Dakota.

Bismarck is one of the fastest-growing small cities in the country.Occupied by indigenous people for thousands of years, a settlement was founded in 1872 by Europeans, named Missouri Crossing in reference to the Lewis and Clark expedition. Later, the town became known as Edwinton (after Edwin Ferry Johnson of the Northern Pacific Railway).

In 1873, the town was renamed Bismarck after the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck in an attempt to attract more German immigrants.A year later, gold was discovered in the nearby Black Hills, and the name became less relevant, as thousands of miners came in search of riches. Bismarck became the capital of the Dakota Territory in the same year and became the capital of the state of North Dakota in 1889.

Bismarck has a four-season humid continental climate with very variable weather. There are cold and snowy winters with high winds, contrasted by hot and humid summers, often featuring thunderstorms. In the summer months, the temperatures are in the low 80s, with overnight lows closer to 60 degrees. Winter is cooler, with temperatures averaging around 25 degrees during the day, and overnight lows approaching zero.
